The Chula Vista City Council postponed its decision on Tuesday to appoint one of the ten final applicants o fill the District 3 vacancy after several hours of hearing comments from the public and interviewing.
The four elected officials on the city council agreed to schedule a special meeting on Jan.31 to continue their deliberations on who will serve the remaining two-year term of former city councilmember Steve Padilla, who successfully ran for California Senate in November.
The council on Tuesday interviewed 10 finalists who applied for the seat and heard public comments from more than two dozen community members. The applicant who is appointed will serve until December 2024.

The City Council has until Feb. 3 to make an appointment. The city must hold a special election must take place if a decision cannot be made by the February deadline, according to City Attorney Glen Googins.
The City Council will hold a special meeting on Jan.31 at 5 p.m. at Council Chambers.
