Children five years and under are able to receive their first COVID-19 vaccination at Rady Children’s Hospital following approval from the U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) last week.

Approval of this age group included approximately 207,723 children ages six months to five years old in San Diego County. The CDC and the Western States committee approved both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines simultaneously for small doses administered with a smaller needle and most times administered in the leg.

Moderna’s pediatric COVID-19 shots are administered in two doses four weeks apart. Each dose contains one-quarter of the adult dose.

Pfizer administers its first two doses three weeks apart and the third dose at least weeks after the second shot. Each containing one-tenth of an adult dose

Rady Children's Hospital told local media outlets that it has both options available with about 7,000 doses on hand at the main clinic. Parents and caretakers are encouraged to make an appointment online.

San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency said parents should contact their pediatrician's office, community clinics, or retail pharmacies to schedule an appointment for shots for their children.

“While children have not been as susceptible to COVID-19, it’s important that they, too, are vaccinated to keep them from getting sick and passing the virus to others,” said Wilma J. Wooten. M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Some parents have been eagerly anticipating the COVID vaccine for their younger kids. They should make an appointment to get them vaccinated as soon as possible.”

Everyone 5 years and older can get a vaccine and boosters at no cost. Parental consent is required for all eligible minors to be vaccinated.
