A Chula Vista woman suspected the murder of her friend last summer appeared in court for a preliminary hearing on Dec.6 that is scheduled to continue today at a South Bay courthouse. 

In August 2020, Christina Garcia, 23, was found deceased near Otay River last summer with multiple gunshot wounds on the 3100 block of Main Street after according to the Chula VIsta Police Department.

Authorities arrested Vanessa Gastellu, 30, on Oct.20, 2020 and was  booked into Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in connection with Garcia’s death. The District Attorney’s office charged Gastellu for murder and several firearm use charges. Garcia’s family described Gastellu as a friend. 

On Jan 6, Gastellu pleaded not guilty in court and was held on a $3 million bail. During the sentencing hearing, Garcia’s mother said she was convinced Gastellu was responsible for her daughter’s death.  

Nearly a year later in a preliminary hearing, Garcia’s mother was asked in court regarding emails sent to her daughter regarding concern of possible gang member retribution that both Gastellu and Garcia associated with.
