A fatal solo traffic collision that combusted into flames in eastern Chula Vista left one motorist dead early Saturday morning.

The Chula Vista Police Department said it recieved several calls at approximately 12:35 a.m. regarding a single-vehicle collision into a tree at the 1900 Block of Otay Lakes Road. Police arriving at the scene discovered a Kia Forte traveled westbound, left the roadway, and collided head-on with a tree in the center median.

The engine compartment became engulfed in flames, which spread to the driver's compartment. Police said several witnesses attempted to extricate the driver and extinguish the flames, though their efforts were unsuccessful.

Lifesaving measures performed on the motorist by officers and paramedics at the scene were also unsuccessful.

“The driver succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene,” Chula Vista Police Officer Ryan Culver said.

Police have not yet determined the cause of the collision. The department called the Chula Vista Police Traffic Bureau to investigate the scene.

Police are withholding identifying information of the victim pending notification to family members.
