The San Diego County Sheriff's department will hold a “Guns for Gift Cards” event on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 9 a.m to 2 p.m with nearly $33,000 worth of gift cards available.

The event will be held at the South Bay Courthouse parking lot located at 500 Third Ave. Attendees must remain in their car and leave their unloaded guns, that must be in working order, in the trunk of their car during this drive through service. Deputies will provide further instruction onsite.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department will give $100 for handguns, rifles and shotguns and $200 for assault weapons with no questions asked. All participants will remain anonymous.

Gift Cards are expected to run out quickly. Lt.Juan Marquez recommends members of the public to arrive early and are invited to trade in as many unwanted firearms.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is in partnership with all South Bay law enforcement agencies including the San Diego District Attorney’s office, the Chula Vista Police Department, San Diego Police Department, San Diego Harbor Police Department and the Coronado Police Department in an initiative to get guns off the streets.

Firearms will be properly disposed of. Firearms with historical significance will undergo an evaluation to determine whether they can be relocated to a museum.

Another event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 9 a.m to 1 p.m in La Mesa where all East County law enforcement will partner together for another “Guns for Gift Cards” event. According to Lt. Marquez, if for some reason gift cards run out, attendees will be directed to this event in La Mesa.
