While the demand for housing in San Diego has been skyrocketing, so has the population, and San Diego County has not been able to keep up with the unstopping demand. Due to this housing prices have been at their highest, which many can’t afford, it has been said by San Diego County that around 20% of San Diegans are spending more than 50% of their income on housing.
To help the community, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors made an immediate release saying that they have made $25 million available for affordable housing developments.
In addition to these funds, Project Based Housing Choice vouchers and Project Based Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing vouchers are also available. Proposals to be considered will support housing for seniors, transition-aged foster youth, persons experiencing homelessness, low-income families, and other at-risk groups.
The latest round of funding available is through the Innovative Housing Trust Fund. It will be administered by the County’s Housing and Community Development Services (HCDS). Real estate investors can access the funding availability through the County Buynet system and HCDS website, the deadline to apply is June 5, 2023.
It’s important to remember that this fund is available to all affordable developments in the county while the Project Based Housing Choice vouchers and Project Based Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing vouchers are available across the county, except for regions that operate their housing agencies: incorporated Cities of San Diego, Carlsbad, National City, Oceanside, and Encinitas.
In the statement issued by the county, HCDS Director David Estrella was quoted, “This is a huge step forward to continue expanding permanent affordable housing options for our most vulnerable neighbors and our heroes who served,” he said. “We will continue chipping away at the housing crisis, getting more people off the street and into a place they can feel safe calling home.”
