CHULA VISTA — The City’s Housing and Homeless Services Department is inviting community members to help choose the name for a new permanent supportive housing development currently under renovation at the former Palomar Motel site, located at 1160 Walnut Avenue.

Purchased by the City in October 2023, the property is being converted into 27 studio apartments designed for individuals experiencing homelessness. According to City officials, the development will combine affordable, long-term housing with voluntary support services such as case management, mental health care, substance use counseling, and job training.

The rehabilitation and conversion work is being led by Wakeland Housing and Development Corporation, the City’s development partner. Once completed, the project aims to provide stable housing and essential services to help residents achieve long-term stability and community reintegration.

As part of the naming process, residents can vote for one of five proposed names: El Nogal, Esperanza, Palomar Point, Solara Commons, and Studios at Palomar. The survey will remain open until November 11, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.

According to the City’s Policy No. 470-01, proposed names should reflect Chula Vista’s history, culture, and identity, as well as its local geography or natural features. The three most popular names will move forward to the City Council on November 18 for final selection.

City officials emphasized that community participation in the process helps strengthen neighborhood pride and create a shared sense of ownership around a project designed to provide dignity and support for those most in need.
