The Sweetwater District VEX Robots League is named one of the top leading educational honor programs in the state of California.
Earlier this month, the Sweetwater District announced that the program was officially selected as one of the 60 recipients of the Golden Bell Award, due to its practices and inclination towards an educational future with a stronger STEM/STEAM presence.
The Golden Bell Awards celebrates their 44th year of existence being presented by the state’s School Boards Association, and is dedicated to promote the betterment in public education by recognizing numerous overachieving and high quality programs across California.
Sweetwater VEX Robotics League Program targets the expansion of STEM/STEAM education across the academic field, with the intention of exposing students to a modern approach in their future profession. More specifically, by using VEX robotics, academic students in the Sweetwater District are exposed to critical thinking learning, improving their problem-solving skills, and becoming familiar with a team-environment setting where they get to compete at the local, state, national, and international level.
In this Sweetwater District program, middle and high school students are given an opportunity to gain skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. The program’s long-term objectives include providing students with adequate preparation before enrolling in college.
“I am immensely proud to see the SUHSD VEX Robotics League honored with the Golden Bell Award by CSBA. This achievement underscores the tremendous impact of robotics in our educational landscape,” said Sweetwater District Superintendent, Dr. Moises G. Aguirre. “It reflects the dedication, creativity, and teamwork of our students and mentors, showcasing how robotics not only enhances STEM education but also fosters a spirit of innovation and collaboration. This recognition speaks volumes about the strength and forward-thinking nature of our robotics program, and I commend all involved for this remarkable accomplishment.”
The award selection process is based on a judging panel formed with experts from various school districts and educational county offices across the state of California. Aside from the quality of the programs reviewed, the panel also considers a variety of factors such as addressing student needs in regards to equity, school climate and safety, accessibility, technology and wellness.
“As we wrestle with the aftermath of the pandemic and address longstanding issues related to student success, it’s important to highlight school districts and county offices of education that demonstrate promising practices for closing opportunity and achievement gaps and supporting student wellness,” said CSBA CEO & Executive Director Vernon M. Billy. “This year’s Golden Bell winners have developed remarkable programs that can serve as an example for schools across the state as they work to accelerate learning recovery and foster healthy school environments for all California students.”
