CHULA VISTA.- On Thursday, March 21, Southwestern College’s Chicano Latino Coalition will
host its annual Cesar E Chavez Scholarship Breakfast to announce the names of students
earning scholarships, and celebrate the spirit of unity, justice and equality.
The event will feature keynote speaker Luis Valdez, an American playwright, screenwriter, film director and actor. Regarded as the father of Chicano film and playwriting, Valdez is best known for his play Zoot Suit, his movie La Bamba, and his creation of El Teatro Campesino.
The event kicks off at 8:00 a.m at the college’s Building 64-1238, directly across from the
library, 900 Otay Lakes Road in Chula Vista.
Since its inception in 2005, the César E. Chávez Scholarship Breakfast has become a labor of
love for the Southwestern College Chicano Latino Coalition. During the event, scholarship
recipients share their academic, professional and personal goals, allowing for those in
attendance to witness the impact of the gift of scholarship.
The mission of the Chicano Latino Coalition at Southwestern College is to support the academic and occupational success of Chicano/Latino students, staff, faculty, and the community of the Southwestern Community College District.
The group promotes a spirit of collaboration to support and facilitate education and professional advancement. Additionally, the organization highlights, celebrates, and promotes Chicano/Latino accomplishments, and provides a forum for the discussion of issues affecting Chicano/Latino staff, faculty, and students.
