The checkpoint will take place from 5:00 PM to 12:00 AM at an undisclosed location within Chula Vista, selected based on data highlighting areas with frequent impaired driving incidents.

The primary goal of the checkpoint is to enhance public safety by identifying and removing suspected impaired drivers from the road. “Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” said Agent Brian Carter of the CVPD. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

The CVPD also emphasized that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol. Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as marijuana—whether used medicinally or recreationally—can impair driving ability, and driving under the influence remains illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI can face severe consequences, including an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties and a suspended license.

This checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
