Supervisor Vargas cited personal safety and security concerns as the reasons behind her decision not to take the oath of office for a second term, despite winning re-election. In her statement, she reflected on her time in public service and the impact she has made over nearly three decades.
Vargas has been a trailblazer in San Diego politics, serving as the first Latina County Supervisor and previously as an elected board member for the Southwestern College Governing Board. During her four years on the Board of Supervisors, she navigated unprecedented challenges, including leading the county through disaster response efforts and the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It has been my honor to serve during unprecedented times,” Vargas shared, emphasizing her dedication to addressing long-standing inequities and driving systemic change. She highlighted her work to ensure that government serves all members of the community and expressed pride in the progress achieved.
Among her notable accomplishments, Vargas spearheaded initiatives that focused on equity, justice, and human rights. She also played a pivotal role in disaster recovery and advocating for underrepresented communities.
Looking ahead, Vargas plans to continue her advocacy outside of public office. “As a Guerrera at my core, I remain committed to the fight for equity and justice in a different capacity,” she stated, promising to stay engaged in efforts to create a more equitable society.
Her announcement marks the end of an era for District 1, and her contributions to the region will leave a lasting legacy. The process to determine her successor is expected to unfold as her term nears its conclusion.
