National City’s recent repeal of the cruising ban on Highland left San Diego as the sole city in the county still enforcing such restrictions in its municipal code. However, with the enactment of AB 436, the ban on cruising in San Diego is set to become history on January 1, 2024.

AB 436, signed into law earlier this year, effectively eradicates a city’s ability to enforce a cruising ban. The United Lowrider Coalition successfully presented their case to Assembly member David Alvarez, the sponsor of Assembly Bill 436, also known as the “Cruising is Not a Crime Bill.” With the bill’s passage, lowriders and car enthusiasts across California can now cruise low and slow without the fear of being criminalized.

To mark this historic occasion, the United Lowrider Coalition has organized a “Sunrise Cruise” starting at 7 am and departing at 9 am from South Mission Beach (West Parking Lot at the end of Mission Blvd.). The cruise aims to commemorate the sunset of the last cruising ban in San Diego County.

The coalition will join lowriders statewide in a commemorative cruise at noon, retracing the “cruising route” from decades ago, starting at Highland, continuing through Chicano Park and up 25th St. to Golden Hill Park. The cruisers will complete a loop and return down the historic route.
