CHULA VISTA – Halloween celebrations trace their origins to an ancient pagan festival celebrated by the Celts 2,000 years ago. Although it has become an annual tradition in the United States, it has at times been marred by tragic acts of violence.

Such was the case with the murder of two teenagers, ages 15 and 17, that occurred on East Prospect Street in Chula Vista at approximately 11:17 p.m. on Friday, October 31, while the city celebrated the so-called “Halloween Night.”

Less than a week after the shooting, the victims were identified as Elías Yañez, 17, of Imperial Beach, and Kane Roldan, 15, of San Diego.

The City of Imperial Beach extended its deepest condolences to the families of both young victims and to all those mourning this tragic loss, noting that their thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

Likewise, on Tuesday, Montgomery High School honored and celebrated the life of Kane Roldan, “a beloved member of the Aztec family whose life was cut short far too soon.”

The school’s statement read: “His joy, laughter, and the countless memories shared with those who knew him stand out. To his family, friends, and classmates, we send heartfelt condolences and remind them that Kane’s spirit will live forever within the Aztec community.”

At this time, authorities do not believe other suspects remain at large, though the investigation remains active, and additional arrests may be made as new information emerges.

Police expressed gratitude to the San Diego Regional Fugitive Task Force and to members of the community whose cooperation was vital.
