SAN DIEGO – During the 2024 tax season, $38.9 million in federal and state tax refunds were returned to taxpayers, according to a joint announcement by United Way of San Diego County, 211 San Diego, Dreams for Change, and the San Diego County Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Coalition.
The four organizations reported that 48,400 tax returns were filed this year, which helped low- and moderate-income individuals and families access valuable tax credits. They said this effort helps bolster community members’ financial security.
Additionally, in collaboration with 45 partner organizations, the San Diego County EITC Coalition alleviated the often-high costs associated with filing taxes by offering free tax preparation assistance and helping identify eligible tax credits.
Free Tax Preparation Assistance
As outlined in the report, the coalition’s free tax preparation services were instrumental in providing financial relief. By assisting with tax filings and identifying eligible tax credits, many community members were able to secure much-needed refunds.
Nancy L. Sasaki, President and CEO of United Way of San Diego County, expressed pride in the organization’s continued partnership with the coalition to help qualified families and individuals in San Diego County file their taxes and claim the credits they worked hard to earn.
“We want to emphasize that these vital resources are available at no cost to low- and middle-income residents of San Diego County who meet the eligibility criteria,” Sasaki stated.
She also highlighted the coalition’s ongoing commitment to education and outreach, which ensures that eligible tax credits are claimed.
