The San Diego Wave is set to be sold to a new ownership group after two years of existence.

According to reports, billionaire owner Ron Burkle is selling the San Diego-based club to the Levine Leichtman family in a two-part deal that is believed to result in a $120 million transaction.

Before its inaugural 2022 season, Ron Burkle paid $2 million in expansion fees for the San Diego Wave.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the Levine Leichtman family to the ownership group of the San Diego Wave,” NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman stated. “As longtime supporters of the women’s game, Arthur and Lauren know well the impact that our league can have in our society, and as savvy investors, understand the opportunities in front of us to continue to grow our league and club businesses.”

This club purchase sets the bar high for the richest deal involving a National Women’s Soccer League franchise. The previous record was the Portland Thorns, who were involved in the $63 million deal made by the Bhathal family, which is also the investor in the Sacramento Kings in the NBA.

However, Burke will continue to be the principal owner of the San Diego Wave through this current 2024 NWSL season.
