San Diego County has earned national recognition as a frontrunner in child care, particularly
through its robust foster family program. Kimberly Giardina, Director of Child and Family
Welfare at the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, proudly announced this achievement.
In a heartfelt gesture of appreciation, the county hosted the “Resource Parent Appreciation”
event on May 3rd to honor the foster parents and families who provide essential support,
security, stability, and hope to every young person in their care. The event, organized in
collaboration with the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and the dedicated staff of the
Child and Family Welfare Agency, welcomed 40 families for an evening of celebration.
Dr. Eric McDonald, Interim Director of the San Diego County Health and Human Services
Agency, delivered an inspiring keynote address at the event. Recognition was bestowed upon
individuals who have made invaluable contributions to the county’s foster parent program.
During her opening remarks, Kimberly Giardina underscored the indispensable role played by
foster parents in nurturing children and commended their transformative impact on the Child
and Family Welfare Department. She also highlighted the department’s ongoing efforts to
secure resources and provide comprehensive training to families and program staff.

Attendees were informed about the upcoming annual Champions Conference 2024, slated for November this year. Additionally, Marylo Meer was honored as the Foster Mother of the Year, receiving the prestigious Debbie Stoltz Award. Recognition was extended to employees from various regions who have demonstrated unwavering dedication to the program.
