During the vigil, 258 empty pairs of shoes will be displayed to represent the lives lost in traffic accidents in San Diego County in 2023. Families of the victims will share personal stories about their loved ones and call on local leaders to prioritize investments in road safety.
Notable attendees include San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, City Councilmember Stephen Whitburn, San Diego Unified School Board Member Richard Barrera, and FSSSD Founder Laura Keenan, alongside other advocates such as Nancy Cavanaugh, Katie Gordon, Michelle González, Ana Cornelius Schecter, and Caleb Carvalho.
FSSSD will propose three cost-effective solutions to improve road safety:
- Upgrading hazardous roads like the infamous “Fatal 15.”
- Implementing reduced speed limits in school zones through AB 43 legislation.
- Enhancing safety measures on San Diego’s six most dangerous pedestrian corridors, particularly near schools.
Ahead of the vigil, at 3:30 PM, BikeSD will host a family-friendly walk and ride, starting and ending at the Alice Birney Joint Use Field.
This event aims to raise awareness about road safety, honor the lives lost, and advocate for tangible measures to prevent future tragedies on San Diego streets.
