CHULA VISTA — As federal immigration enforcement actions intensify across the region, local law enforcement agencies in San Diego County are working to calm fears among immigrant communities. In a statement released June 10 by Chula Vista Police Chief Roxana Kennedy, local officials made clear that their role remains focused on public safety—not immigration enforcement.
Chief Kennedy, speaking on behalf of the San Diego County Chiefs and Sheriff’s Association, acknowledged the anxiety triggered by recent federal operations. She emphasized that local officers do not enforce federal immigration laws and are not involved in questioning individuals about their immigration status.
“Our focus is, and will remain, the safety and well-being of all our communities,” the statement read. The association urged residents to remain peaceful if they choose to protest, while warning that unlawful acts such as vandalism, assault, or arson will be handled in accordance with the law.
The advisory comes amid growing tension and reports of federal immigration activity in multiple counties. Community groups have expressed concern that local police might be assisting in enforcement efforts—a concern the association directly addressed.
According to the statement, if local agencies are present at federal operations, it is solely for safety-related reasons. “This support is strictly for safety and security purposes and does not reflect participation in immigration enforcement,” Kennedy noted.
The statement also highlighted California Senate Bill 54, known as the California Values Act, which prohibits local law enforcement from using their resources for immigration enforcement. The law, in place since 2018, was designed to reinforce the separation between local policing and federal immigration duties.
By reaffirming this policy, local law enforcement leaders hope to rebuild trust with immigrant communities that may feel vulnerable during ongoing federal crackdowns.
The San Diego County Chiefs and Sheriff’s Association stated it remains committed to upholding justice and fairness across all neighborhoods, regardless of immigration status.
