SAN DIEGO.- Around 120 works make up Forging a Legacy: 15 Years of Historic Acquisitions, an exhibition that joins the centennial celebrations of the San Diego Museum of Art.

The show features works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, and Andy Warhol, alongside pieces by Gabriele Münter, John Singer Sargent, Richard Deacon, Pan Gongkai, and Jusepe de Ribera, among others. The selected works are part of more than 14,500 acquisitions added to the museum’s collection over the past 15 years.

Museum executive director Roxana Velásquez highlighted the growth of the collection during this period. “Since we opened our doors 100 years ago, and especially in the last 15 years, we have built something truly extraordinary with our collection that reflects the ambition, diversity, and generosity of this city and its people,” she said.

The institution noted that over the past decade and a half it has expanded its acquisition focus to include works from East Asia, South Asia, the Islamic world, and Latin America, in addition to Europe and the United States, in an effort to reflect the region’s cultural diversity.

Founded in 1926, the museum has become one of the leading art institutions in Southern California, with a collection spanning from the Renaissance and Baroque periods to modern and contemporary art.

Forging a Legacy: 15 Years of Historic Acquisitions is open to the public from May 21 to September 7 at the museum’s location in Balboa Park, San Diego.
