The Port of San Diego commits $850,000 to support environmental education programs that provide an innovative, hands-on curriculum to about 75,000 students within the San Diego Bay watershed.
The Port’s Environmental Education Program was established in 2003 to proactively engage students, teachers, and communities throughout San Diego Bay. The Board of Port Commissioners has approved agreements with 12 environmental education programs aimed to educate communities about pollution prevention, environmental stewardship, healthy ecosystems, and natural resources connected with San Diego Bay.
The Port issued a Request for Proposals in November 2021 for education programs and recieved 14 for consideration. The Chula Vista Elementary School District was selected to receive $47,2000 over three years for its Coastal Educational Program.
“The Port of San Diego is pleased to provide environmental education opportunities to students within the Port’s five-member cities and throughout the San Diego Bay watershed, which reaches as far east as Mount Laguna,” said Chairman Dan Malcolm, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “Educating students, their teachers, and families within these areas is crucial to protecting the health and environment of San Diego Bay and our surrounding waterfront.”
As a part of the program, the Port established the School Partnership Program to ensure environmental education reaches students from each of the Port’s five-member cites – Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City, and San Diego. The seven schools that participate in the program are Bayside Elementary in Imperial Beach, Harborside Elementary in Chula Vista, Kimball Elementary in National City, Silver Strand Elementary in Coronado, Perkins Elementary, Logan Elementary, and Silver Gate Elementary in San Diego.
