Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin will officially go toe-to-toe in a boxing ring for a third time later this year.
Earlier today, both boxing warriors announced that their highly-anticipating trilogy is indeed happening on September 17 of this year.
This fight is confirmed just weeks after Mexican boxing warrior, Canelo Alvarez, experienced his first defeat since losing to Floyd Mayweather nearly a decade ago in September of 2013.
Prior to losing to Bivol on September 7th, Canelo was expected to not only win this month's fight, but also arrive to the next fight against GGG with full momentum.
However, Alvarez lost that fight against Bivol, and instead of a rumored rematch against the Russian fighter, Canelo decided to move on to the much-anticipated boxing trilogy with the Kazakhstani fighter.
“We already had that contract [with Gennadiy Golovkin], that agreement, so we have to continue what we started, and I think those are the two biggest fights in boxing, the fight with Golovkin and the rematch with Bivol,” Álvarez reportedly said on Monday. “Unfortunately, we lost, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to try again. The important thing here is perseverance and we’re going to do it again. What is certain is that we are going to return in September.”
The 40-year-old Eastern European fighter previously doubled-down on the first two fights, saying that clearly won the first two fights, and he expects the third fight to be no different again.
“I am comfortable knowing I won those fights,” Golovkin told ESPN earlier this year. “I do not look back at the decisions. … I thought I won the first two, so winning the third one would be the same to me.”
Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn that even despite Canelo's loss, this trilogy is still the biggest boxing event in the industry at this moment. Hearn says the disliking between these two fighters is what makes this trilogy an incredible match-up.
“The Canelo vs. GGG trilogy is the biggest fight in boxing, and I am delighted to get this made for September 17,” Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn said. “These are two men that bitterly dislike each other and want to end this incredible series with a blistering KO. I truly believe this will be the most thrilling fight between these two great champions and it will be fireworks from the first bell to the last man standing.”
The fight will be streamed live on pay-per-view through DAZN on September 17, and the venue of this event is still yet to be confirmed.
