Tesla lands a deal with the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon to have an exclusive lane on their 9-mile Southern US-Mexico border.
The big news for the company was reported this week, which aims at helping the car company and its distributors get across the border much quicker.
However, this lane does not apply to Tesla owners.
Ivan Rivas, Nuevo Leon's economy minister, spoke with Bloomberg about this deal for both parties, which he calls an "incentive" awarded to Elon Musk's car company.
“It was a simple incentive,” Rivas said in an interview with Bloomberg. “What we want is a crossing that’s much more expedited and efficient. And maybe there will be a lane for other companies in the future like there is for Tesla.”
According to experts, this Tesla-only border lane will have an estimated crossing wait of no longer than 20 minutes.
The car company has multiple suppliers located in the state of Nuevo Leon, including the following:
- EnFlex Corp.
- Quanta Computer
- French firm Faurecia SE
- German firm ZF Friedrichshafen AG
- APG Mexico
And according to experts, Tesla has also been seeking potential locations for a factory based in Mexico.
A spokesperson representing the U.S. Customs and Border Protection told TechCrunch the following statement regarding the access lane reserved for Tesla and its suppliers.
“For northbound commercial trucks at the Colombia-Solidarity Bridge, currently there are only the regular cargo lanes and the Free and Secure Trade (Fast) lane, which is for the exclusive use of companies that are enrolled in the CBP-Trade Partnership against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program,” a CBP spokesperson said. “There is no separate, dedicated lane for Tesla or any specific company.”
This unusual deal comes not too long after Elon Musk's Tesla recently moved their headquarters from the Tech-powerhouse city of Silicon Valley to Austin, Texas.
