The San Diego Loyal delivers a masterclass as they defeat San Antonio FC 3-0 in a massive home game.
Over the weekend, The Loyal took down the top seed San Antonio FC to gain three huge points at Torero Stadium on Saturday night.
Evan Conway, Grant Stoneman, Kyle Vassell all scored one goal each in the second half of this match to give San Diego the 3-0 victory over the heavy favorites from San Antonio.
San Diego Loyal head coach Landon Donovan says he felt his team controlled the majority of the match, labeling this a match where they were too much to handle for San Antonio over a span of 90 minutes.
“It’s really hard to defend us for 90 minutes and we made the game the way we wanted,” Donovan said. “Over 90 minutes we were just too much for them," he added.
With this win, the San Diego Loyal improve to an impressive steak of four consecutive victories, which is something the club has not accomplished in its history.
The goal scoring came about in the 65th minute when Evan Conway the first blow, then Grant Stoneman delivered the second in the 72nd minute, before then Kyle Vassell landed the final punch to seal the deal in the 77th minute. They ended the game in a span of just 12 minutes.
Coach Donovan says they have always had the ability to create chances, but this time around, their finishers are finishing better than ever. Donovan says a big factor in this winning streak is the team's chemistry in the locker room, including a competition among them where they are trying to see who can score the most goals in the season.
“We just have better players first of all,” Donovan said. “We create a decent number of chances each game but now we have the players who can finish the plays off. That makes you seem like a great coach when guys score goals and right now our guys are hitting the net. There is a friendly competition going on within the guys on who can score the most goals and that has helped us thrive.”
The next Loyal match is tomorrow Wednesday night, August 10, where the Loyal is scheduled to host Monterey Bay Union FC. This match will be the first time ever the both clubs face each other.
