16-year-old Jorge Martinez, a Hilltop High School student, was shot three times in an altercation that involved gunfire at On The Rocks Cocktails on "E" Street.
He was accompanying his mother, Michelle Herrera, who was there to pick up a friend who called her for a ride home after a night out Saturday around 2 a.m.
As Herrera and her friend were leaving the bar, a man attacked her friend, and as she tried to intervene she was also attacked. Jorge got out of the car to help his mother and in the midst of the fight there were gunshots fired.
Jorge was shot as he was covering his mother to protect her from the gunfire, and was impacted in the thigh, in his side, and in the back where the bullet was lodged in his spine. He had surgery on Tuesday to have the bullet removed, but it is not clear if he will regain the ability to walk.
Herrera claims that they did not see the shooter, but they don't believe the man attacking is the same as the shooter. Witnesses have stated that the shooter ran away.
41-year-old Richard Bernal was shot and would die at the hospital.
Police say the shooting suspect is still at large and is a dark-skinned male with a brightly colored shirt.
