Authorities say that the suspect in a machete attack has been shot and killed after attempting an attack on an SDPD officer.
On Tuesday morning, just after 8 a.m., authorities received a concerning call of an assault taking place in the Fairmount Park neighborhood on 1500 block of Bridgeview Drive, involving a deadly weapon in this report.
When authorities arrived at the scene, they came in contact with two local senior women who had just been attacked by someone carrying a machete. Both women were reportedly in their 70s.
According to officials, one of the women had suffered a laceration on her head area, and the other woman on her neck area.
Eventually, local officers confronted the suspect who had barred himself inside of a residential bathroom, according to Lt. Chris Steffen.
Lt. Steffen also said that officials attempted to negotiate with the armed suspect before then using local police k9 to attempt to apprehend the unnamed attacker.
“At some point during that incident, the K9 was struck with some sharp object, wherein an officer was also assaulted with a sharp object,” Steffen said. “It’s still unclear if it was the machete used against the victims or another type of weapon.”
According to authorities, one officer eventually fired one round of fire at the attacker, causing an immediate wound. The suspect was then transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The victims of this attack are ages 73 and the other 79. Both were also taken to the hospital to treat their wounds.
No police officers were injured in this attack, but the police K9 in this confrontation was taken to the hospital where he's expected to fully recover.
According to officials, the attacker was related to the two victims, though it is not clear what type of relationship it was between them.
The suspect remains unnamed at this time, though police say it was a 48-year-old man.
