What a weekend for San Diego sports! One of the best ones yet.
The past 48 hours have been incredible for our city, starting with the San Diego Padres and now San Diego Wave.
As you all know by now, the Padres are now in the NLCS after eliminating the Los Angeles Dodgers in game 4 over the weekend.
But it didn't take too long for San Diego to receive more great news, as the San Diego Wave defeated the Chicago Red Stars last night in comeback fashion in their first-ever home playoff match.
The comeback occurred after San Diego conceded early in the night before coming back and winning it 2-1 at home.
And guess who made the game-winning goal?
You've guessed it.
The Golden Boot.
Alex Morgan scored her goal in the 110th minute of extra time at Snapdragon to seal the deal and help San Diego reach the semifinals.
The semifinal match will be a battle between two teams from the West Coast who finished within the top 3 of the league this season.
Portland Thorns will be hosting the San Diego Wave this coming Sunday at Providence Park to fight for a ticket to the final.
After the match, Morgan said it was special to provide another home victory for San Diegans one last time in this inaugural year for the expansion club.
“The atmosphere was incredible,” Morgan said. “It was so much fun to play in front of our fans for one last time this season.”
Snapdragon Stadium also broke yet another record over the weekend, becoming the NWSL playoff attendance record-setting crowd.
Up to 26,215 fans showed up at Snapdragon Stadium to support the Wave, breaking a record that was previously held by the Houston Dash when 21,284 fans filled PNC Stadium just hours before Wave FC's match.
