The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a voluntary product recall for dry shampoo following concerns about potentially elevated levels of a human carcinogen.

Unilever recalled select lot codes of dry shampoo aerosol products produced before October 2021 from Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head), and TRESemmé " due to potentially elevated levels of benzene", which is classified as a human carcinogen.

"Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening," according to the FDA.

According to the FDA, these products have been distributed nationwide and retailers have been notified to remove the recalled products from store shelves.

The FDA advises consumers who have aerosol dry shampoo products should stop using them. The products are eligible for reimbursements by visiting UnileverRecall.com.

A complete list of the recalled products and consumer UPC codes can be found here.
