“In 2019, an estimated 53.6 million tonnes of e-waste were produced globally, but only 17.4% was documented as formally collected and recycled,” said the World Health Organization.
Many of us have become accustomed to a lifestyle centered around consumption. We often find it easier to throw things away and replace them with new ones. As a result, landfills are rapidly expanding, with electronic waste (E-waste) being the fastest-growing waste stream in the world.
This is why the San Diego Fixit Clinic will teach you how to fix your items for free! On December 16 at the Chula Vista Norman Park Senior Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Learn how to fix broken appliances and gadgets, repair road and mountain bikes, and mend your favorite outfit. You can register for this free public activity here.

Back in 2013, the City of San Diego adopted the Zero Waste Plan because they claimed that recycling should be the last resort, not the first, for adequately disposing of broken or unwanted material.
In 2016, Zero Waste San Diego initiated the first SD Fixit Clinic to meet Zero Waste’s goals. This event offered a platform and opportunity to learn how to repair damaged materials and encouraged a self-sufficient attitude. By promoting this skill, we can not only help preserve the environment but also equip future generations with a valuable ability.
Many electronic devices and textiles are currently being disposed of, even though they could be easily repaired or mended. People find it easier to throw them away and buy new ones instead of trying to fix them. However, the city provides us with opportunities to learn new skills, so it’s worth taking advantage of them. You never know where learning a new skill can take you!

This is a great idea. We are a consumer society and people have stopped fixing things. It was cheaper to buy new or you can’t find the parts.
Love this idea !
