San Diego Wave FC announces that General Manager Molly Downtain will be stepping down on April 15, 2024.
The club announced earlier today, Monday, February 12, that this move had been discussed with club president Jill Ellis since last month.
“I began discussing my future with Jill Ellis last month and after an amazing three years with the Wave, I’m ready for a change and I’m looking forward to taking on new challenges,” said San Diego Wave FC General Manager Molly Downtain. “Since day one, I’ve tried to always do what was best for the club, the players and this city and I am grateful to ownership and Jill for the support and opportunity to bring this roster to life. The foundation that has been laid and built is something I’m beyond proud of. The direction that this club is heading is exciting and I wish the team, staff and fans the very best of luck.”
Downtain became the first General Manager in the history of the Wave in 2021 when the club became a new expansion team in the National Women’s Soccer League.
During the leadership of Downtain, the club signed stars such as Alex Morgan, Abby Dahlkemper, and Canadian goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan and selected the best defender in American women’s soccer in Naomi Girma.
“Molly’s dedication and unwavering commitment to our club helped solidify San Diego Wave FC as a force in this league from day one,” said San Diego Wave FC President Jill Ellis. “We are incredibly grateful for Molly’s valuable contributions and the foundation she has laid. On behalf of the club I extend my heartfelt thanks to Molly and wish her the best in her future endeavors.”
We will report who will become the next General Manager when the San Diego Wave announces it.
