La Jolla Playhouse presents Working Girl: The Musical through December 7, a stage adaptation of the iconic 1988 film that combines the original story with new theatrical and musical elements. The production features music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, a book by Theresa Rebeck, choreography by Sarah O’Gleby, and direction by Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley.
The story follows Tess McGill, a secretary from Staten Island with big ambitions, whose boss, Katharine Parker, steals her major idea. When her superior is out of the office, Tess seizes the chance to prove her talent and determination, supported by her friends and a business partner.
The stage version retains the central narrative while expanding on the challenges women faced in the 1980s workplace—addressing issues such as misogyny and harassment, and emphasizing friendship and perseverance as key tools to overcome adversity.

The musical incorporates lighting and smoke effects, along with visual elements that recreate the corporate atmosphere of the era. Cyndi Lauper’s music brings an energetic and contemporary tone that enhances Tess’s empowering journey, while Rebeck’s script adds new moments and relationships that deepen the characters and storyline.
Designed as a world premiere, the production held “First Look” performances from October 28 to November 1, allowing audiences to experience the show while the creative team made final adjustments.
Audiences can also participate in additional events, including talkbacks with the artists on Tuesday, November 11 and 18 following the 7:30 p.m. performance, and moderated discussions on the themes of the show on Sunday, November 23 after the 1:00 p.m. matinee.
The adaptation offers theatergoers a unique opportunity to rediscover a familiar story in a new light—blending humor, music, and social commentary in a production that reflects both the challenges and resilience of women in the workplace.
