A new study by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) found three out of four children in the country have been infected with COVID-19, mainly from the Omicron variant, and among unvaccinated communities.

"As of February 2022, approximately 75% of children and adolescents had serologic evidence of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection, and approximately one-third had become seropositive since December 2021," the study says.

"The largest increases in seroprevalence between September 2021 and February 2022 occurred in the age groups with the lowest vaccination coverage," the study reads.

The study does not specify whether any child ethnic group has had a more significant impact than others. Instead, it says that "lack of data on race and ethnicity precluded weighting for these variables."

"These findings illustrate a high rate of Omicron variant infection, especially among children," the CDC reported.

It reaffirms that "vaccination remains the safest strategy to prevent complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection, including the hospitalization of children and adults."

The CDC applied the study to samples of 200,000 people from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Researchers found that infections also increased among US adults. For example, 34 percent of the adults included in the study had signs of disease in December, and by February, that number increased to 58 percent.
