The City of Chula Vista partnered with Kumeyaay Nation tribal leaders to organize a flag-raising ceremony to celebrate Indigenous Peoples day on Monday with a flag loaned from the Kumeyaay Nation.

The flag-raising ceremony will take place on Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. in front of the Chula Vista City Council Chambers. The celebration will include speakers, cultural dances, and songs to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day.

While the second Monday in October is federally recognized as Columbus Day, Indigenous People’s day is observed alongside or replaces it in several cities and states. Chula Vista designated Oct. 12 as Indigenous People’s Day in 2021 to improve acknowledgment and support Indigenous communities.

The Kumeyaay inhabited what is now San Diego County for thousands of years. They have traversed the Southern California and Baja California region from the Pacific Ocean to the desert approximately 75 miles north and 75 miles south of the international border separating the United States and Mexico.

Of the 18 federally recognized bands in San Diego County, 12 are Kumeyaay/ Diegueno, including Barona Band, Campo, Ewiiaapaayp,Jamul, La Posta, Manzanita, Mesa Grande, San Pasqual, Santa Y sable, Sycuan, and Vieja.
