Chula Vista will announce further details on the Republic Services settlement agreement on Tuesday during the city council meeting.

Chula Vista city attorney Glen Googins is expected to provide further details on July 19 about the settlement agreement and mutual release with Republic Services. According to a city document, both parties entered the agreement on June 9.

The dispute between the city and Republic Services began on Dec.17 when over 250 unionized sanitation workers represented Teamsters Local 542 formed a strike. The sanitation workers called for better pay, working conditions, and benefits.

Both parties settled in January for nearly a $5 an hour increase over five years and a one-time bonus of $1,000. The employees earned $24.60 an hour before this settlement.

Thousands of customers in Bonita, Chula Vista, and several parts of San Diego County were affected by the strike. According to the agreement, Republic Services reimbursed the city $16,668.80 for direct third-party costs by the end of June.

The waste hauler had until July 13 to provide the city with a credit breakdown for its residential, multi-family, and commercial customers. All administrative fees, late fees, and penalties for all customers in good standing that failed to make payments during the strike will be waived.

Under the agreement, residential customers will receive 46 percent of the credit based on the monthly rate and the percentage of the bill that is for collection service. So, if your monthly bill is $30 then you will receive a $13.80 credit.

Credits for multi-family and commercial customers will be calculated on a case-by-case basis considering the level of service disruption to each customer. The waste hauler said customers will be notified through its website.

As mandated under the agreement, Republic Services will also implement a procedure for customers to dispute any amount of credit received by no later than April 30 for residential customers and June 30 for multi-family customers.

In addition, the waste hauler is obligated to provide the city with $90,000 in additional services that include studies to determine best practices to waste reduction and waste collection from city properties and events.

The city council meeting will be held at 276 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista at 5 p.m. Click here to view the meeting live in English and Spanish.
