Chula Vista is hosting a free composting event in partnership with Republic Services “in appreciation of the community’s effort to recycle its yard waste”, city officials wrote in a statement.

The free composting event is scheduled for Aug. 27 from 8 a.m. through noon at the Otay Landfill at 1700 Maxwell Rd. The city will hold free compost events three times a year.

Composting is the recycling of food and other organic waste that provides a range of environmental benefits, including improving soil health, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, recycling nutrients, and mitigating the impact of droughts.

According to the city, the compost is the stabilized product of a biological “manufacturing” process that uses bacteria to break down the organic materials collected from residents and businesses in the City’s Yard Waste Collection program. Adding compost to your garden at home provides the needed resources for healthy plants.

“It’s important to keep your yard waste cart free of non-organic materials such as rocks, cigarette butts, metal, plastics, and ceramics. These items do not break down and therefore contaminate the compost,” the city wrote in a statement.

The final compost event of 2022 is scheduled for November 5. Visit the city’s calendar to view all event dates.

Community members who may be curious about composting may participate in the City's seven-week Master Composter Training Course. The Fall 2022 course will meet at the Living Coast Discovery Center on Tuesdays from Sept. 6 through Oct.18 from 6:00 to 8 :30 p.m.

According to the city, over 350 people have attended the master course event since 2011. Students are given presentations on the many topics that include “bugs” in the compost pile, healthy soils and several different methods of composting. Field trips to the landfill and a community garden are also included.

For more information or to register for the course, email Katharine@thelivingcoast.org or call 619-409-5900.
