Disney launched a new project, Storyliving by Disney, to create master-planned neighborhoods, the first one slated for construction in a city near Palm Springs.

The first of these residential communities will be built in Rancho Mirage in the Coachella Valley. According to Disney, the location is inspired by the fact that Walt Disney once owned a home in the area to spend time with family.

Disney will reveal the other locations in the future. Renderings of the first community dubbed “Cotino” can be viewed on Disney’s blog. According to the company, Cotino is being developed in collaboration with DMB Development, which is highly regarded for its development of large-scale planned communities in the U.S.

Renderings of Cotino Large glass doors and an outdoor patio open up to a 24-acre artificial lake, where residents are shownpaddle-boarding or lounging on the beach. There are plans for a nearby downtown, featuring open markets, restaurants, and small businesses.

The Southern California community will have “vibrant new neighborhoods that are infused with the Company’s special brand of magic,” Disney wrote in a blog post.

The renderings show tree-lined streets, pools, backyards, and community recreational areas. According to the company, “Imagineers” will have a direct role in crafting the amenities and neighborhood characteristics.

The company mentions a variety of options for home buyers ranging from estates and condos, though price ranges are not yet released. At least one section will be designed for residents 55 and older.

According to the company, many of the community amenities will be offered in the form of club memberships, and Disney cast members “trained in the company’s legendary guest service” will operate the community association.

Disney says it received specific plan approval on major aspects of the development from the local government, though plans on this scale are oftentimes subject to change.

The company did not release specific dates or prices of Cotino, though news, updates or to access additional information can be found at www.storylivingbydisney.com.
