Lucky Charms is under investigation by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as consumers report gastrointestinal issues after eating the cereal.
The consumer-reporting food poisoning website, iwaspoisioned.com, received hundreds of reports of Lucky Charms causing vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea. The website describes itself as a “consumer-led website for diners to report suspected food poisoning or bad food experiences.”
“I’m a 76-year-old who has eaten Lucky Charms for a VERY LONG TIME. Love them, my guilty pleasure. However, I had a bowl last night before going to sleep and in just a short while, I had diarrhea, nausea, sweating, and lightheadedness,” One consumer report from Sammamish, WA read. “Before my bowl of cereal, I had felt fine. I finally went to sleep and felt better this morning. I had a feeling it had to do with the cereal and now, reading of others having the problem, I am sure it was.”
“I’ve eaten Lucky Charms twice this month and both times have left me with severe cramping and pain in my right abdomen. Other symptoms also include nausea and diarrhea after eating the cereal,” a consumer report from Paris, Calif., read.
As of April 16, there has been no official recall of the product, but the FDA announced it received over 100 complaints about the popular breakfast cereal.
The Minneapolis-based cereal maker, General Mills Inc., said it is aware of the complaints and takes them seriously.
General Mills said it encourages consumers to share their concerns directly with the company.
