Residents in the city of Chula Vista are mourning the loss of Micah Pietila-Wiggs, a former Eastlake Titan, after suffering a fatal car accident over the weekend.
On Saturday morning, Micah Pietila-Wiggs' life was taken at the age of 21, when he was involved in a car crash near the U.S/Mexico border.
Pietila-Wiggs was a very well-known athlete in the South Bay, as a former Little League World Series star player that came out of the Eastlake community.
The Eastlake High School football Twitter account released a statement after the news broke, sharing the significance that Micah had in for the Titan community.
"It is with deep sadness that we post about the loss of former Titan, Micah Pietila-Wiggs. An individual that shined both on and off the field. You will be forever remembered! We ask that you send your thoughts and prayers to the Pietila-Wiggs family during this difficult time!," the account tweeted in regards to Micah's passing.
As of now, details involving the car accident are reportedly still being investigated by officials.
During his time as an Eastlake High School athlete, Micah played all four years as an infielder and outfielder for the Titans varsity baseball team. Staff members at Eastlake High have said nothing but good things about Micah's attitude on and off the field.
Eastlake High School's baseball coach Dave Gallegos says that he was a very well-liked kid, who always had a positive image on campus during his high school years.
"Micah was one of the best kids ever. He is always happy, always smiling, he was everybody's best friend. There wasn't a kid that didn't like him." Gallegos said.
Pietila-Wiggs went on to play one season of college baseball for the Lobos of the University of New Mexico, where his college baseball manager says Micah always carried a smile on his face.
And just last week, the 21-year-old has started a new academic life at San Diego State University where he had just begun to pursue a business major degree.
