A fight among inmates on Wednesday at the George Baily Detention Facility in Otay Mesa left one man dead, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department announced.

Sheriff's deputies reported several inmates fighting shortly after 7 p.m. in a housing module. Once the men were separated, deputies contacted 52-year-old Raymond Vogelman, a San Diego Resident, near his assigned bunk and noted he sustained injuries that required treatment by emergency medical personnel.

According to Lt. Chris Steffen, deputies and jail medical staff administered aid until paramedics arrived. Paramedics transported Vogelman to a hospital for further treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Vogelman was arrested by the San Diego Police Department and booked into the San Diego Central Jail on March 3 for two counts of burglary and a felony while on bail. Vogelman was transferred on Sept. 1 to the George Bailey Detention Facility.

The Sheriff’s Department said Vogelman died after being assaulted by other inmates, but did not provide further information about the incident.

The Medical Examiner's Office has been notified of the death. An autopsy will be scheduled soon. The Citizens' Law Enforcement Review Board was notified of the death.
