They just keep winning.
Alex Morgan? She just keeps scoring.
The San Diego Wave keeps the best record in the NWSL after going into Cary, North Carolina, and defeating the Courage in a tight battle on Sunday with a 0-1 scoreboard at WakeMed Park filled with over 6,000 fans in attendance.
This was also head coach Casey Stoney's return game after being absent due to testing positive for COVID-19 recently, which had kept her off the sidelines until this past weekend in North Carolina.
It was a hot and sunny Sunday in North Carolina over the weekend, and head coach Stoney had an issue with the match being held at 2 p.m. when the weather was nearly 90-degrees high during competitive play. However, Wave FC was able to overcome and secured a third clean-sheet of their inaugural season as an expansion team, still maintaining the top spot of the National Women's Soccer League.
“The conditions were unbearable just sitting on the sidelines, let alone playing,” Stoney said after the victory. “The 2 o’clock kickoff is interesting to me in these conditions.”
Alex Morgan continues to find the back of the net.
In the 41st minute of this match, the World Cup-winning superstar secured her sixth goal of the year after Belle Briede set up the game-winning play, by making a smooth pass through two defenders that allowed Morgan to find enough space to find the back of the net.
This big road win comes days after the Wave faced their first loss of the season on the road against Racing Louisville FC in Louisville, Kentucky.
However, the rest of the week leading to Sunday's match against North Carolina was all about bouncing back for head coach Casey Stoney, which ultimately became transparent on the field this past weekend.
“I think we had a disappointing result on Wednesday, but the key today was that they bounced back. Incredible attitude and we changed the shape and in two days they picked it up brilliantly and applied themselves. We have to be immensely proud of the performance and ultimately that we came away with three points today.”
Wave FC will continue their road trip as they head up to the North West in the incoming days, where they'll face the OL Reign at Lumen Field in Washington.
