There's a new U.S. Navy Destroyer named the USS Telesforo Trinidad after a heroic Filipino sailor from over a century ago, and he was paid tribute this week in San Diego.
Telesforo Trinidad, a Medal of Honor recipient as Navy fireman 2nd class, is historically known for rescuing two crew members when a chain reaction caused an explosion in the USS San Diego, resulting in five deaths among sailors.
This marks the first time the Navy honors a Filipino with a Medal of Honor, by naming a destroyer after his legacy.
On Memorial Day, dozens of Filipino leaders and allies gathered at Liberty Station in Point Loma, where they held a commemoration to pay tribute to the fireman 2nd class for his heroic actions in 1915.
The event was co-hosted by JoAnn Fields, Government & Public Relations Director of API Initiative, and Marcus Fraiser, Co-President, Filipino Club, Mira Mesa High School.
Congresswoman Sara Jacobs, California's 53rd congressional district, was also in attendance, and she highlighted the importance of Trinidad's name in American military service throughout generations.
"The USS Telesforo Trinidad will honor firemen Trinidad selflessness, bravery, service, and it will also uplift the proud history of Filipino and Asian American military service," Congresswoman Jacobs stated at the commemoration. "It's a touching connection between the past, the present and our future. Thank you to everyone who spoke up advocating to make this a reality."
Carlos Del Toro, United States Secretary of the Navy, released a statement saying that this move was always a goal for him since the day he was sworn in as Secretary of the U.S. Navy.
"My first time learning about Petty Officer Trinidad's story was as a midshipman at the Naval Academy and since being sworn in as Secretary, I have wanted to honor his heroic actions by naming a ship after him," said Del Toro. "This ship and her future crew will be a crucial piece in strengthening our maritime superiority while also emphasizing the rich culture and history of our naval heritage."
The Secretary of U.S. Navy expresses his deep admiration for Trinidad's legacy in the military, saying that having a great figure like him as the face of a Navy Destroyer is huge for their diverse culture.
"I am pleased to honor Trinidad's life and legacy today, especially during Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month," said Del Toro. "Having a ship named after such a significant figure highlights our diverse culture and that our people will always be our strategic advantage against any adversary. I hope the naming of this ship is a beacon for not only Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders but for all our Sailors, Marines, and civilians who serve across the Department of the Navy. The service and sacrifice of these men and women have made our military and our national stronger and better."
