Saul “Canelo” Alvarez defeats Caleb Plant by knockout Saturday night in Las Vegas, crowning himself as undisputed boxing champion of the super middleweight division.
The Mexican champion claimed victory in the 11th round of the fight, after the 29-year-old American produced a quality defensive performance resulting in a late Alvarez' victory, one round away from the judges deciding the fight.
As expected in every boxing fight involving Alvarez, the aggressive approach from the Mexican came in the second half of the event, forcing referee Russel Mora to end the battle after Plant was dropped twice on consecutive punches in the 11th round.
With this victory, Alvarez ended Plant's undefeated boxing record at 21-0.
The Mexican boxer adds another monumental victory to his already luxurious resume, adding a historic milestone of becoming undisputed super middleweight champion.
Alvarez went on to congratulate Plant on his performance after the fight, and also wished the American fighter success going forward. "In the fight, we have to hurt each other but, in the end we're all human and we want the best for each other."
During the post-fight press conference, the now undisputed boxing champion stated that he believes that he will be back to highlight another main event in May of 2022, and will focus on recovering, “I believe next May. My body needs some rest, my body deserves it. Next May I will be back in the boxing ring.”
Alvarez highlighted his love and appreciation for his Mexican culture in such a historic night for his legendary boxing career, crediting the loyal fan base that has stuck by his side throughout the years.
“The connection has always been there. I’m really happy and really glad that the Mexican fans that were able to come and witnessed the fight, shared this success for me, and it means a lot to be recognized as a Mexican undisputed champion.
