A Crusader has officially committed to becoming a Jayhawk in the incoming years.
On Saturday, Mater Dei Catholic High School wide receiver Surahz Buncom announce that he will be heading to the University of Kansas to play Division-1 college football.
The Chula Vista resident had announced last week the top five choices of where he would like to play as a collegiate player, and many predicted that his final decision will be Kansas.
In a post-decision interview, Buncom revealed why his decision ultimately came down to the University of Kansas.
The high school star from Chula Vista said that he feels like Kansas will not only help him evolve on the field but off the field as well.
“There were a lot of reasons why I committed to Kansas,” Buncom said. “It wasn’t just a football decision or a four year decision. This was a long term decision that I thought was the best move for me on and off the field.”
Buncom had recently visited the campus and was highly impressed with his experience walking through the halls of the university, and immediately knew that the school offers a whole lot more than just a good football program.
“I loved it there,” Buncom said. “I was blown away and honestly didn’t know it was like that out there. I’m not sure what I thought it was going to be like but I was so impressed with all the opportunities the school provides after football in terms of networking and the different programs they offer. I think a lot of people make college choices and only think about the next couple of years. For me, I was looking long term and I love all the resources the school provides for student-athletes," he added.
Aside from what the campus has to offer, one of the most crucial factors in college football recruiting is the coaching staff at the helm of the program.
For Buncom, it was important to know that the person in charge of teaching him high-level skills at the wide receiver position is a reliable leader.
Wide receiver coach Terrence Samuel represents that offensive mentor for the type of football player Buncom would like to become during his collegiate evolution.
“I love coach Samuel,” Buncom said. “He has spent time at Michigan State and Syracuse and is a very technical, fundamental coach. My dad is a coach too and knows football and he really likes coach Samuel and said he knows what he’s talking about. “He’s a teacher and we had a chance to watch a practice and I like how he coaches. He’ll teach on how to create separation and make it very easy to understand so I’m really excited about the chance to learn from him.”
