The San Diego Bay of Lights Parade was canceled on Sunday due to a Winter Storm advisory that would create dangerous conditions for boating participants.

During the 52nd year of this long-standing San Diego tradition, the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights dazzles and entertains bayfront crowds during a pair of evenings on Dec.11 and 18. The Coast Guard called off the Dec. 11 event due to high wind speeds, but festivities are anticipated the following Sunday.

"The safety of those who participate in the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights is of the upmost concern to us," San Diego Bay Parade of Light organizers said in a statement.

Every year, the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights brings more than 100,000 San Diego residents and visitors to the shores of San Diego Bay each year to see approximately 80 lavishly decorated boats fitted to the annual theme. A variety of prizes and awards are presented to the best decorated boats and those that best capture the parade’s magical theme.

This year’s theme is FantaSEA on the Bay, according to event organizers.

“This year we chose a theme that we felt encapsulated the essence of Christmas time here by the sea,” said Parade Chairman Larry Baumann. “What better way to celebrate the fantasy and excitement around Christmas time than by the bay in beautiful San Diego.”

This year, for the 6th time, the parade will proceed to the pier at Cesar Chavez Park before making the turn to Coronado, giving spectators another area to view the parade.

There is no cost to view the parade.
