Major League Soccer could be making its way to America's Finest City.

According to MLS Commissioner Don Garber, the possibility of San Diego getting an MLS team is being discussed amongst the league.

The commissioner confirmed the news in his annual State of the League address this week in Southern California.

Garber says that San Diego is a great location for an expansion team, as he sees the city as much more than just a laid back beach town with great views.

“I'm a big believer in San Diego,” Garber said. “ … I think there's a view that San Diego, it's too nice there and people are out surfing and hanging out at the beach and I just don't buy it. I think San Diego's a great sports market, it's a gateway city.”

These rumours make sense when one considers the fact that San Diego has opened its doors to Snapdragon Stadium since September of this year.

If Major League Soccer were to move forward with a San Diego expansion project, Snapdragon could very well be the home of the city's men's professional soccer team.

This news isn't surprising to many in the league who have heard San Diego's name mentioned in potential expansion sites for about four years now.

With the additional of an MLS team in San Diego, the city would then have three professional soccer teams to root for in the future, including the San Diego Wave and Landon Donovan's San Diego Loyal, which both made a post-season run this past season in their respective leagues.

Back in 2018, a public vote prevented the 'SoccerCity' project to move forward, but commissioner Garber says he hopes this time around the city will reconsider the positive impact an MLS team would have on the city.

“Sometimes it takes a step back to take a couple of steps forward, and we did take a step back,” Garber said. “But I think it's fantastic that they are where they are. I hope we continue to make progress with the ownership group that we're taking to and we're optimistic.”
