Down goes the big apple, as the San Diego Wave defeats Gotham FC in the second game of the regular season with a scoreboard of 4-0.
On Saturday night at Torero Stadium, The Wave captured yet another victory to hold a 2-0 record as of today, getting off to an excellent undefeated start in their first season as an expansion club.
It was an all-around collective win for the Wave, though the spotlight of the night goes to American soccer legend, Alex Morgan.
Morgan scored all four goals on the night, in a match where San Diego came out firing right away as soon as the initial whistle was blown. The World Cup winner's super hat-trick started when she capitalized on a penalty kick just before halftime, and scored her fourth on the 91st minute just before the final whistle.
Alex said after the game that it was the perfect night, when one considers that it was the first ever home regular season game, kept a clean sheet, and dominated the scoreboard in front of their fans.
“To be able to put a show like we did tonight, to get a clean sheet which is extremely important, and scoring goals, I think we couldn’t have asked for a better game for ourselves and for this city.” Alex Morgan said after the victory. There’s no doubt about it. I am…Home (in San Diego). I think everyone can feel it and see it. The ball just dropped my way tonight after the two penalties, but I feel like all around, it was such a team performance, we were everywhere on this pitch. It was a really great team effort by this team.” she added.
Wave FC goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan expressed how much she values the ability to keep back-to-back clean sheets in the regular season, first in Houston and last night at home against Gotham FC.
“It’s really important to us that we represent our home really well and that we keep clean sheets at home. When people come here, we want it to be a really hard place to play and a hard place to score. We accomplished that today, I think people aren’t going to second guess us anymore and they’re not going to take us for granted. That’s two games in a row (recording clean sheets)." Kailen Sheridan said after the match.
Sheridan is looking forward to next week's match against Chicago, a match-up that will be much different than the first two regular season games, against a team that is currently seeking their second victory of the season.
“Chicago is a really good team, we know that they’re going to bring a different style of game than what we’ve seen the last two games. Ultimately, if we play our game and bring our game to them, we’ll be successful.” Kailen Sheridan on facing Chicago next Sunday.
