San Diego Wave FC goes on the road and defeats the Portland Thorns 2-0 over the weekend.

On Saturday night, the Wave reclaimed their top spot in the NWSL after going to the Northwest and taking down the Thorns.

With a pair of first-half goals from Kristen McNabb and Alex Morgan, the Wave are once again in control of the league standings as of today.

This huge victory comes one week after the Wave won their last home match at Torero Stadium against the Houston Dash last weekend.

Portland Thorns coach Rhian Wilkinson praised the Wave for coming out and displaying a very efficient performance on the road.

“I was just saying to the players, it’s really hard to say this when you lose 2-0 and it’s never good when you lose, there’s a lot of play today that I was really proud of,” Thorns coach Rhian Wilkinson said. “The team never stopped fighting. Until the very last whistle they were going. Honestly, when we were 2-0 down, I expected us to come back in the game. Congratulations to San Diego. I think they played a very efficient type of game.”

Portland defender Becky Sauerbrunn said after the match that San Diego played the type of game they expected from them, but it was still tough to stop as they conceded a pair of goal before halftime.

“A lot of credit to San Diego,” Thorns defender Becky Sauerbrunn said. “They’re very good at what they do. We knew what they were going to do … and it’s tough to win games when you’re letting goals in. But I thought our response was really positive.”

The Wave will continue their road journey in the incoming days when they face the Washington Spirit on September 10. This next game will be their last match before their Snapdragon opener on September 17th against Angel City FC.
