San Diego County Health and Human Services officials reported over 800,000 COVID-19 cases since the first local case in March 2020.
The county’s new somber pandemic milestone has reached a total of 803,292 cases as the weekly average cases have more than tripled in the past 30 days.
Officials report a sharp increase this week, with 232 people hospitalized and 24 in intensive care.
County deputy public health officer Cameron Kaiser said that this milestone is “a reminder this isn't the time to let our guard down”.
“Please, make sure you’re up to date on your vaccinations and boosters, and consider a mask, especially if you’re medically vulnerable yourself or maybe around people who are,” Kaiser said.
County health officials continue to stress precautionary measures like masking and social distancing and say that vaccination and boosters continue to be the best defense against COVID-19 and associated hospitalizations or death.
Since June 2, the county reported 12 additional deaths, bringing the regional total to 5,315.
People ages five and older are able to receive a booster. Those 50 and older, and those who are moderately or severely immunocompromised, are encouraged to get a second booster four months after their initial booster.
