San Diego County Supervisor Nora Vargas proposed that San Diego strengthens the integration of immigrant communities with the ending of Title 42.

Vargas said that by ending Title 42, the administration of President Joe Biden "ends a racist and xenophobic campaign, a Trump-era policy that, under the guise of public health, denied people the fundamental right to seek asylum.".

Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced Friday that Title 42 would stop operating on May 23.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) estimates that in the two years that this measure has been in force, it prevented migrants from requesting asylum in 1.7 million cases; some of those cases are from the same people who tried again to find refuge at the border.

In reaction to Mayorkas' announcement, Vargas said that "now, more than ever, we must lead the way in building a fair and humane immigration system to face the current challenges in the world."

The supervisor urged us "to continue providing support and services to those who join our community."

She recalled that "That is why I strongly advocated the creation of the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs that will help us advance and advocate for the fully active, civic, social and economic participation of immigrants and refugees in San Diego County."

Vargas proposed "working together with social organizations to ensure that migrant families have the services and resources to integrate fully into the community."

Also, the mayor of San Diego, Todd Gloria, expressed satisfaction with the end of Title 42.

Like Vargas, Gloria proposed working with social organizations to guarantee that the asylum process is orderly and that migrants have access to the necessary services and resources."
