The Sweetwater Union High School District has handled recent events that have been connected to potential human trafficking.

Although the office of Superintendent Moisés Aguirre declined to respond to questions that were sent to him concerning an incident that occurred
several weeks ago, El Latino San Diego has a letter sent to parents by the District and signed by Aguirre.

"There have been at least two incidents in the past week in the areas surrounding OUR San Ysidro Schools with cars with passengers inside, stopping students and asking them to get in the car. Then it proceeds to say: "In both instances, students CORRECTLY refused to get into the vehicles."

Already reported to the Police Department

However, the Superintendent clarified in that same letter that “both incidents were reported to the San Diego Police Department. And the police are investigating these reports."

Additionally, a letter stating that "The safety of students is the highest priority" was sent to the parents of the approximately 37 schools that make up the School District. These schools include secondary schools, high schools, adult education centers, and alternative education centers.

Recommendations to Parents and Students

Following the incidents at San Ysidro High School, the letter provides the following advice to both parents and students, which may also apply to other schools to increase awareness of potential events.

1).- Always walk with your friends and always stay close to a friend
2).- Leave quickly if a stranger approaches you
3).- Never talk to strangers
4).- Do not enter a stranger's vehicle; or a friend's vehicle without parental permission
5) Always tell your parents where you are going
6).- Stay in visible places
7).- Say no to any offer from a stranger
8).- Always be aware of your surroundings
9).- Fight and always yell "HELP" if someone tries to grab you
10).- Immediately inform your parents, school district employees, and/or the police if there is any problem or security incident.

And the letter concludes with: “Human trafficking is a major concern in our community. If you suspect human trafficking activity, please contact the San Diego County Human Trafficking Task Force at 1-888-3737-888 or text “Be Free” to 233733 Thank you for helping to ensure the safety of children in our community.”

The Communications Department gave an abrupt response when asked for more information about the incident: "The district will not provide further comment at this time."
