United Airlines will discontinue nonstop service between San Diego and Los Angeles by the end of October, the airline confirmed on Friday.

The move comes as the airline plans to discontinue services in Flagstaff, Arizona (FLG) by Oct.30, and Texarkana, Arkansas (TXK) by Sept. 6, a United Spokesperson told Chula Vista Today in an emailed statement.

The airline did not provide an exact reason for discontinuing the non-stop line between San Diego and Los Angeles by Oct. 28, but it said: “a combination of factors have to work in harmony for any route to be successful including customer demand in the local market, resources to support the operation, the needs of our broader network and more”.

United Airlines has served 71,620 passengers who took flights between San Diego and Los Angeles, according to San Diego International Airport Spokeswoman Sabrina LoPiccolo. Once the airline completely discontinues its route, Delta Airlines would become the only other carrier that provides service between the two cities.

United Airlines will continue to serve San Diego from several hubs, including Denver, Newark (EWR), Washington/Dulles (IAD), Houston, Chicago (ORD), and San Francisco (SFO).

Although the United spokesperson did not share a lot of details, they shared the following statement:

“We’ve made the difficult decision to suspend service to two cities this fall – Flagstaff and Texarkana – and have already started working with customers on alternate plans”.
